Quartz is one of the most commonly found rock formed minerals. Its name is an old German word meaning “hard”. Comprising of a simple chemical formula: silicon dioxide or SiO2, it is so common in the continental crust that it is more extraordinary when it is absent, rather than present.  Typically, clear or milky white, it is thought the pink color that gives Rose Quartz its name is due to titanium, iron or manganese impurities. Occurring in large translucent masses it is made up of many inter-grown smaller crystals.

Rose quartz occurs in extreme igneous rocks that form during the final stage of a magma's crystallization, called pegmatites. It develops at very high temperatures of between 400°C and 700°C. Rose quartz is also found in massive hydrothermal veins, but more this is a less common occurrence. Rose quartz is usually mined manually from pegmatites, as the use of explosives would shatter the rocks and cause fine cracks in the quartz that decrease their value.

Rose Quartz is found in pegmatite locations all over the world, but is commercially mined in the Southern Black Hills area in South Dakota, as well as in Brazil, South Africa, Namibia, India, Madagascar and Japan.
